NEVADA HIGHER-EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIESThe Nevada Association of Land Surveyors is working diligently with local higher learning institutions to bring about advanced educational experiences in this State. This is very important upon consideration of the fact that NALS supported the enactment of Senate Bill 542, which passed this last 1999 Legislative Session. BACCALAUREATE DEGREE & PROPOSAL MASTER OF SCIENCE DEGREE & PROPOSAL Generally, Nevada's pending law will require that candidates for licensure within this State, among other considerations, be required to have graduated with a minimum of a baccalaureate certificate from a four-year degree program in a land surveying and/or closely related field approved by the Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors. The stipulation to the enforcement of this new law requires that a four-year survey related degree be in place by the year 2006. If this requirement is satisfied, the law will then become effective on year 2010. Currently plans look very good for the program to come to fruition at the Great Basin Community College, in Elko, NV. According to Dr. Jay Larson, the program will be an inverted one wherein the core technological studies will be required of the students initially. This will test their enthusiasm for land surveying before they are burdened with the broadened subject so crucial for their pubic interaction, social interface, business competency, articulation, technical writing and a host of other highly important elements that make for sound practitioners. Students with existing credit may apply to the course and after 15-credits have acceptance of those courses that are approved for the program. Graduates of the Community College of Southern Nevada's Associate Degree program, and others, will find the distance educational elements highly desirable and practical given potential families, workloads and other considerations. Currently interested persons are encouraged to contact the school directly at: http://www.gbcnv.edu The original proposal to incorporate a baccalaureate degree was prepared by our Consultant, Mr. David W. Gibson, PSM, Geomatics Program Director, University of Florida at Gainesville. New drafts have been created. However, the original may be read with the following link consultant proposal . ASSOCIATE DEGREE & REQUIREMENTS Mr. Jeff Ohrn, PLS, is working with the Community College of Southern Nevada to develop a continually more comprehensive and scoped 2-year Associate degree program in land surveying. The program is located within the Building and Technology Department. It provides training and instruction for those who desire to gain more breadth and scope than is usually provided within the on-the-job training environment. Take a moment to review the program. Feel free to visit the Community College web site for further details. Please direct your comments regarding this program by emailing Mr. Jeff Ohrn ohrn@co.clark.nv.us Nevada Association of Land Surveyors Scholarships and Awards 2007IntroductionThe Nevada Association of Land Surveyors may provide scholarships to a recipient enrolled in a Land Surveying/Geomatics curriculum at any institution in the Nevada System of Higher Education. The NALS State Board of Directors determines the amount of scholarships to be awarded each year. Scholarships are awarded to eligible students in the manner deemed appropriate by the board and are based on both the merit and need of the recipient. NALS may also award scholarships funds to a Land Surveying/Geomatics program at any institution in the Nevada System of Higher Education for program support.
